Explosions at US Steel Clairton Plant in Pennsylvania: 1 dead, 2 missing, several injured
Explosions at the US Steel plant near Pittsburgh on Monday have left one person dead, two missing, and at least nine others hospitalised, officials confirmed. Emergency workers are actively searching through the heavily damaged and charred rubble for any additional victims.
Kasey Reigner, a spokesperson for Allegheny County emergency services, said, "One person has died, and two are currently believed to be unaccounted for. Others have been treated for injuries."
The Allegheny County Emergency Services said a fire broke out at the plant at around 10:51 a.m., and five people have been transported for medical treatment.
Incident at coke oven batteries
In an official statement, US Steel Clairton Coke Works, now a subsidiary of Japan-based Nippon Steel Corp., said the incident occurred at the plant’s coke oven batteries 13 and 14. The company confirmed that emergency teams were dispatched immediately to the scene but provided no further details regarding the cause, casualties, or extent of the damage.
David Burritt, CEO of US Steel, stated, "We are working closely with local authorities to investigate the cause of this incident."
Governor Shapiro pledges state support
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro said his administration is coordinating with local officials following the explosion.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Shapiro said the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency and state police are in contact with first responders and have offered “all assistance.”
“The scene is still active, and folks nearby should follow the direction of local authorities,” the Governor wrote, adding, “Please join Lori and me in praying for the Clairton community.”
