India gets its first 'green steel' TMT bars for sustainable manufacturing, claims ARS Steel
ARS Steel claims its 550D grade TMT bars, made using 98% recycled steel, renewable energy, and zero fossil fuels in the manufacturing process, emit just 0.59 tCO₂ per tonne of finished steel (tfs) — far below the national average.
India has entered the green steel era with the supply of its first ultra-low emission TMT bars — used for reinforcing concrete in large-scale construction — to Epic Group’s new manufacturing facility in Bhubaneswar, Odisha.
The move comes through a collaboration between ARS Steel, fashion manufacturer Epic Group, and sustainability-tech startup sentra.world.
The ₹377 crore facility is being built as a net-zero plant for energy and water usage, and will use green steel to cut its overall carbon footprint.

“With a national average emission intensity around 2.5 tCO₂/tcs, ARS Steel has set a new benchmark by achieving an emission intensity of 0.59 tCO₂/tfs, making it 4X greener than average TMT bars and one of the lowest-emission steel producers in the country,” a joint statement said on Friday.
TMT bars, or Thermo-Mechanically Treated bars, are essential to modern construction. They combine strength with flexibility and are widely used in infrastructure such as buildings, bridges, highways, and industrial projects.
What makes this steel “green” is its drastically lower climate impact. India is the first country to officially define green steel ratings, with any steel emitting below 1.6 tCO₂/tfs rated as 5-star.
“Epic Group’s choice of ARS’s green steel has reduced the embodied emission of their building by approximately 20%, transitioning from the traditional blast furnace method to the cleaner electric route of steel production,” the statement added.
